The holiday season is one of the most wonderful times of the year – the parties, traditions and of course the food.
December is when most of my healthy eating and fitness routine goes out the window.
Especially when travel is involved. Last year when we were on a Disney cruise, I overindulged and told myself “We probably won’t be doing a Christmas cruise again anytime soon so what’s another slice of cake going to do to me?” 😉 Multiply that by 10 days and well… you can imagine what happened. I came home, stepped on the scale and immediately decided I would train for a 5K.
I ended up completing the 5K but it took more than half a year to prepare for it. HA!
This year, however, I am making a conscious effort to enjoy the Christmas season without sacrificing my health and fitness goals. This way, come 2018 I won’t have to do a total reset like I did last year. The 5K was fun but not THAT fun if you know what I mean….
Are you heading out on the road to meet up with family or friends for the holidays? Or are you escaping to somewhere warm and sunny for the last few days of 2017? Here are 6 ways to stay healthy and happy over the holiday season.
Indulge Wisely
There’s no need to deprive yourself of gingerbread cookies or eggnog, just don’t make that your main course. Sample the holiday treats and save room for the healthy stuff like whole grains and greens. Remember to take a multivitamin that can help you meet your nutritional needs. One-A-Day® helps your body metabolize proteins, fats and carbohydrates.
Relieve Heartburn
The multi-course meals, the desserts and holiday drinks – holiday celebrations often revolve around food. And lots of it!
To avoid discomfort related to heartburn or indigestion, make sure you always have something that will provide fast relief so you don’t miss out on all the tasty dishes and drinks.
Alka-Seltzer® RELIEFCHEWS come in three delicious flavours and help to neutralize excess stomach acid so your tummy can rest easy. Bonus – they’re not gritty and there’s no chalky taste!
Get Enough Sleep
It might be tempting to stay up late while you’re on vacation but you may find yourself needing more coffee than usual in the morning.
If you have little ones, they’ll most likely stick to their regular sleep and nap schedule – which could mean starting your day at 6 or 7AM.
If you have older kids you might be lucky enough to sleep in on some (or all) days.
Whatever the case, getting enough sleep every day has been associated with less weight gain and improves your emotional well-being. You’ll feel recharged and can fully enjoy precious holiday moments with family and friends.
Avoid Bathing Beauty Problems
Heading to the beach for the holidays? Yeast infections are surprisingly a common vacation problem for women – especially if you’re spending most of your days in a bathing suit.
Make sure to keep CanesOral® Combi-Pak on hand for easy and convenient relief if needed.
Say Goodbye to Allergies
Don’t let pesky allergies ruin your vacation or celebrations!
If you’re heading to a sunny destination to escape the snow and sub-zero temps, make sure to pack allergy meds just in case you run into trouble.
AERIUS® provides multi-symptom allergy relief for 24 hours, so you can do the things you want to, whenever you want to. This saved me from spending an entire day with watery eyes and a runny nose at the beach in the Caribbean last year!
Not heading to the beach this year? If you’re spending the holidays at Grandma’s house, AERIUS® can help with those indoor allergies too – like dust and pet dander.
Excercise Daily
Most people want to relax during the holidays – they take time off from work and want to lounge in front of the fireplace or on a beach chair. Whether you’re waiting to board the plane or waiting for the next holiday party to start, try to squeeze in a bit of exercise every day. It can be as simple as walking around the airport terminal before your flight or around the block before a big dinner. Or plan a morning skating or tobogganing with your kids.
Some exercise is better than no exercise and come January 1st, exercising daily will be part of your regular routine. One resolution to take off your list!
Staying active not only helps your heart rate but also boosts your mood and energy levels. offer to pick up last minute items at the grocery store or corner store or go tobogganing before dinner with the kids. Staying active not only helps your heart but also boosts your mood and energy levels.
Wherever your holiday plans take you, make sure you’re prepared with these travel essentials and health strategies.
Happy holidays everyone! See you in 2018!
