Expectant Mothers
As pregnancy is not an illness, air travel does not usually present health concerns for pregnant women. However, we recommend careful planning in consideration of your destination and schedule.
- Precautions before travel

- Consult your physician in advance to see if it is safe for you to fly.
- Consult with your doctor if you have any systems such as bleeding or morning sickness, or if you have any complications including threatened miscarriage, anemia, or toxemia of pregnancy during pregnancy.
- Reduce stress as much as possible.
- The best time to travel during pregnancy is the stable period between 12 and 28 weeks.
- Cases when a consent form and medical certificate are required for international routes

- When the expected delivery date is in 4 weeks or less (36th week of pregnancy or after)
- When the due date is in 14 days or less, an obstetrician must accompany the expectant mother.
- When the due date is not certain.
- When multiple births may be expected
- When there were previous premature births.

- Medical certificates

- The doctor responsible must fill in the due date, whether or not it is safe for the woman to fly, and any special precautions that should be taken during travel.
- Medical certificates must be completed 7 days or less before departure.
Infant (under 2 years old)
Infants are not required to have their own seat however, you must inform Japan Airlines that you will be traveling with an infant on your lap. Infants are charged 10% of an adult fare plus taxes, even if the infant will be on the lap of another passenger for the flight.
Only one lap child is allowed per adult. If traveling with more than one infant, a seat will have to be purchased for each additional infant.
A seat may be purchased for an infant as long as you have the proper child restraint device.
A seat will have to be purchased for any flight that a child is 2 years or older.
Children (2 to 12 years old)
Child fares vary according to route. Child fares cover those aged 2 to 12 years.
Baggage Allowance for Infants
Infants are allocated 10kg for checked baggage plus either one fully collapsible stroller or car seat. Children over 2 years old have the same baggage allowance as adults which is 20kg.
Strollers, Bassinets and Child Restraint Devices
STROLLERS
You may use your baby stroller up to the boarding gate at some airports. Please ask the airport personnel if this is possible when you check-in.
Space on board is limited, so checking-in your stroller is strongly encouraged. Checked strollers will be returned to you as quickly as possible upon arrival.
Please use the free baby stroller service provided by your departure airport. No reservation is required. Please note that your request may not always be honored due to supply issues.
Free stroller service is available at the following airports in Japan and overseas:
Japan: Narita International, Kansai International, Chubu Centrair International and Komatsu.
Overseas: Frankfurt International (Germany), London Heathrow (UK), Indira Gandhi International (New Delhi, India) and Soekarno Hatta International (Jakarta, Indonesia)
BASSINETS
Bassinets are available on international flights however reservations are required and are available in limited numbers.
Bassinets are ideal for infants weighing up to 10.5kg. Dimensions of the bassinets are: 77 cm (L) x 32.5 cm (W) x 15 cm (D)
CHILD RESTRAINT DEVICES
Child restraint devices must have the labels noted below, or you will not be allowed to use it during take-off, landing, and surface movements. This includes booster seats and other types of harnesses.

Special Services
Rental Infant Seats: Available on international flights however reservations are required.
- Please request in advance when making a reservation. Rental of infant seat is free of charge.
- It is available when a seat is purchased for the child, who must be under 3 years of age.
- Must be reserved at least 96 hours prior to your flight.
- If a seat is purchased for the child, please feel free to bring along your own infant seat. It must satisfy requirement for cabin use (please see Child Restraint Device section above). Confirmation is required in advance.
Disposable Diapers: Nepia brand “GENKI !” diapers M & L sizes. Reservations are required for disposable diapers.
Changing stand (in the lavatory): Available all on JAL aircraft
Baby Meals: Available on all international flights (except Kansai to Gimpo route) however reservations are required. Meals are based on age. Babies up to 8 months old will receive a mail kit that includes 2 types of strained baby food, a baby spoon, a bib and a straw. Infants 9 months and older have meal kits that include a hot main entree, a banana and crackers.
