The Strathallan Hotel in Rochester, New York

Post last updated July 25, 2013

For our first road trip of the year, we decided to stay close to home (mid April weather is very hard to predict – snow some years, beach like weather in others) and take a relatively short drive to Rochester, New York.

We stayed at The Strathallan, a modern boutique DoubleTree by Hilton hotel for the weekend and had a wonderful weekend getaway.

Kudos for Customer Service and Complimentary Valet Service

We arrived around 8pm at night and were delighted when we were told valet service was complimentary. Phew, no need to circle around the building looking for a parking spot!

Staff was friendly and courteous and immediately handed us those famous DoubleTree by Hilton cookies upon check in. Yummy! A quick note though to those who have food allergies – the cookies may contain traces of nuts and other allergens.

Fantastic Family Friendly Suites & Rooms

We stayed in a 1 King Bed & 2 Room Suite which boasts a separate bedroom and sitting area with pull out sofabed and desk.

Our suite also had 2 flat panel TVs (one in each room), a bar area with sink, mini fridge and coffee maker and a spacious washroom with a large stand up shower.

There is no tub so if you are travelling with kids who prefer baths than showers you may have to bring your own travel tub to the hotel. The spa inspired shower is HUGE so it has more than enough space to fit one.

Our suite was very spacious for our family of four and the kids enjoyed running around and playing hide and seek every night before bed.

The bar area and mini fridge were great to have as it allowed us to store our own drinks and snacks and allowed us to take our time getting ready for the day at our own pace.

We had a light breakfast each morning (cereal, oatmeal, fruit, coffee and tea etc) and had pizza delivered one night after a long day of museum hopping.

Standard guest rooms at The Strathallan (non suite rooms) have a microwave and mini fridge in the unit under the TV.

Love the Location

Located on East Ave in downtown Rochester, The Strathallan is located steps away from many family friendly restaurants and local attractions (including the George Eastman House and Rochester Museum and Science Center).

We loved the location as everything we visited was within walking distance or less than a 10 minute drive away from the hotel.

It is located close to Interstates 390, 490 and 90 and is a short drive away from the Greater Rochester International Airport.

Popular on Weekends

The hotel also seems to be a hot spot for locals to gather and the weekend we visited there were several parties booked at The Strathallan.

Some lasted past midnight and we could hear music and people talking from our room on the sixth floor. We remedied this by setting the fan on “constant” and then had no problem sleeping through the night.

Overall Impressions

There is a lot to love about this hotel including location, great customer service, clean and modern rooms and complimentary valet service.

There is a indoor pool (an amenity that we look for for our kids – although we did not have time to swim the weekend we visited), free WiFi for all hotel guests, an in house restaurant, bar and lounge and 24 hour convenience store in the lobby.

The Strathallan in Rochester, New York is a great option for those looking for family friendly accommodations close to all the major attractions.

Check out some of the specials and packages that The Strathallan is currently offering.

*Disclosure: My family received a complimentary stay at The Strathallan during our weekend in Rochester. All opinions are my own.

Wow, what a great sounding hotel. I love the DoubleTree cookies. For the kids it is the perfect treat to reward them for good travel. I love all the little extras they include and the proximity to attractions. Keeping this handy and planning a trip to Rochester!

Yes those cookies are incredible. Not sure if they are healthy but that’s ok. Like you said, it’s a reward for no meltdowns!

I really want to go to Rochester this summer with my daughter. We all the stuff you lug on a road trip with kids I love the idea of free valet! This is definitely a hotel I will look in to, thanks!

That was exactly it Sarah! We had so much stuff in the trunk along with all these snacks, milk and drinks from a quick stop at the grocery store for the mini fridge if we had to unload everything and then park the car we probably wouldn’t have settled in until 10-11PM!

Love DoubleTree Hotels! This one looks very modern and stylish. I will definitely keep this in mind for future travel to Rochester. Those DoubleTree cookies are worth the visit alone!

That looks like a great hotel. Whenever I travel, location of accommodations is at the top of my list, and I’ll remember this hotel when I go to New York, I’m sure.
